Google’s cofounder wrote an essay about how the world has changed since the company started

Google is known for its ambitious projects, and cofounder Sergey Brin highlights exactly where the company is going in an addition he wrote to the company’s proxy statement.
The statement doesn’t reveal anything new — but it shows how Google sees the technology industry evolving.

While things like search and Gmail were essentially considered yesterday’s moonshots, technology is advancing at such a pace that computerized contacts and self-driving cars are bound to be a big part of our future, according to Brin.

How Google Finally Got Design

Google’s transformation into a company that creates beautiful software is the story of how tech itself has evolved in the mobile era.

It would have been crazy to say just a few years ago. But today, Google produces better-designed software than any other tech behemoth. If you don’t believe that, then set down your Apple-flavored Kool-Aid. Take a cleansing breath, open your mind, and compare Android and iOS.

Start with push notifications—a crucial feature that’s telling precisely because we take them for granted. How’s Apple doing? Your push notifications appear on your lockscreen. Careful. If you want to follow up on one but don’t swipe exactly on the notification itself, you’ll dismiss it. Where did it go? To find it, you drag your finger down the top edge of the screen. Here they are: An unruly list crudded up with headers and dividers, organized by app even if you wanted them arranged in a timeline, with nary a hint that you tap to open an app.

Google Maps gets its Material Design upgrade

Plus some minor tweaks

Google has so far made good on its promise to keep things rolling with the Material Design updates, with Google Play, Google Drive, Docs, Wallet, and Play Games all getting updated – plus others.

Now Google Maps is the latest Google app to be refreshed with the new visual style, not to mention some other improvements.

Google Maps UX Designer Evelyn Kim wrote on the company’s Maps blog that the new update is about improving functionality along with the app’s look.

“Layers and buttons come to life so you know just where to touch to get directions, recommendations and imagery,” she wrote.

Google Maps gets better integration with Uber and OpenTable

Google Maps can do more than just give directions.Google unveiled a new update Wednesday that allows users to make restaurant reservations and get more precise Uber estimates from within the Maps app.

Both the iOS and Android versions sport a redesigned look and feel to bring the app in line with Google’s new Material Design philosophy.

“This new look is all about creating surfaces and shadows that echo the real world; with Google Maps’ new material feel, layers and buttons come to life so you know just where to touch to get directions, recommendations and imagery,” Evelyn Kim, UX Designer for Google Maps, wrote in a blog post.

Google’s Workforce Diversity Little Changed in Past Year

Google Inc. made little progress in its efforts to diversify its workforce in the past year, even as the company increased hiring of women and minorities.
Women made up 30 percent of Google’s workforce as of January, the same percentage from the previous year, according to data released Monday by the search giant. Google said 21 percent of the people hired for technical jobs in 2014 were female, meaning the total number of women in the employment category rose 1 percent.
Whites and Asians made up 91 percent of the employee base, the same as last year, Google said. Blacks and Hispanics make up about 5 percent of the total.
